”The Echoes Of Serenity”

Recently, the theme for our annual school magazine was announcedThe Echoes of Serenity. Now, you might be wondering, “What does that have to do with STEM, Kiara?” Well, let’s start at the beginning.

What does serenity mean? According to Google, it’s “the state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled.” Sounds lovely, right? But still — there isn’t a STEM connection?

Wrong. Because today, we’re going to explore the science behind serenity. In other words: How does our brain find peace?

You see calm and peace, is not just a feeling — it’s a result of how our brain and body works together.

Let’s break it down:

  1. Hormones: Now this is most predictable one out there anyone (yes even commerce students) would’ve guessed it. It’s that basic! But which hormones? The Feel-good hormones of course! These are: serotonin, dopamine (Sounds familiar? Must be one of those motivational videos.), and oxytocin.

2. The Brain’s Calm Center: Now since we are talking about the brain there obviously has to be some part of the brain related to it. This part is called the prefrontal cortex- sounds complicated I know but it’s simple really it’s named based on it’s position:- “Pre” means in front of, “Frontal” refers to the frontal lobe of the brain, “Cortex” means the outer layer of the brain better I know. Now enough with the names what does it do? It’s responsible for thinking, decision-making, self-control, and regulating emotions- so if you’re still rational you owe your prefrontal cortex one. This part is in charge when you’re calm but like many of us the prefrontal cortex has a hard time managing stress this is when the amygdala takes over. The amygdala controls fear and panic, like a fire alarm in your brain.

Now you know what’s responsible for that cozy calm you feel on rainy days — when there’s a blanket over your legs and a mug of hot chocolate (or chai — don’t come at me). And yes, Mumbai heat, this is a jab at you.
